Keeping up with the changes which are impacting the everyday tasks of frontline workers in the cleaning industry is a full time job in and of itself. From the new technology of “Blue Green” cleaning to the requirements of the Globally Harmonized System and SDSs, there is always something new to talk about. These changes are being seen in the custodial/cleaning closets in facilities everywhere, or are they?

I want to keeping you informed on who has joined in the education/certification during the year and I will continue, as I firmly believe it is the people who make up our great organization. Instead of posting this monthly, I am going to do several months at a time.

Cavalier Inc has taken a proactive approach to the cleaning industry. The first step was to put its staff through the GCI courses and earn the certification as a Green Clean certified organization. Cavalier now is capable of offering GCI Green clean courses to their many customers and area organizations.

I was recently asked,"Where does “Envrionmental Health Services” start? My answer was that it starts with a change of mindset. There is no other one place where I can tell if the mindset has changed more than with the custodial or janitors closet. This is the one place where the individual can show their own personality as well as attitude.

In 2012, the MSDS program was changed to a Globally Harmonized System (GHS) which requires a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for all products. Today, this new formula for hazardous classification and labeling provides a uniform format to be followed by various chemical companies, state regulations, and associations. While not perfect, it meets the needs of the chemist, the end user, and most importantly, the industrial worker.

This past week, Paul Fennewald with the Missouri School Boards Association and I produced our 5th webinar in the 11 part series. The title; PARTICIPATE. There are many individuals in our world who are giving lip service to the Green and Healthy cleaning issues of our time. Although the webinar does focus on schools, the message is completly applicable to any and all faculties.

GCI continues to grow in its reach to individuals throughout our communities. One such way we work to assist people in the enrichment of their individual lives and careers is through job skills improvement. Larry Canty joined our ranks in 2012 to spearhead the workforce and corrections divisions.
